Functions vs. Relations
8.F.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.1
8.F.3 Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear. For example, the function A = s2giving the area of a square as a function of its side length is not linear because its graph contains the points (1,1), (2,4) and (3,9), which are not on a straight line.
HSF.IF.A.1 Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of corresponding to the input x. The graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x).
1) Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
The first standard that relates to this assignment is 8.F.1 because it says that an input must have only one output for it to be a function. The next standard it 8.F.3 says that the equation y=mx+b is interpreted as a linear function and it has a straight line when graphed. The last standard HSF.IF.A.1 says that a domain must be parted with only one range. these standards relate to the standard because I needed to know all of the standards to differentiate a relation and function.
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well n this assignment?
The first step that I took to complete this assignment was to learn how the differentiate relations and functions. The second step is cutting out the different functions and relations on the piece of paper. The third step was to make a t-chart of organize the relations and functions into two groups. The last step was to identify if the functions were linear or nonlinear and glue them to the correct side.
3) This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment demonstrates that I can know the characteristics of a linear function. The characteristics are an input must only have one out but, must have a equation of y=mx+b, must be a straight line when graphed, and a domain must be parted with only one range. It also shows that I know the characteristics of a nonlinear function. Lastly, it demonstrates that I can organize in the correct fashion.
4) I could have improved my work on this assignment by...
I could have improved my work on the assignment by double checking my work. When we went over the assignment with the teacher I had miss placed a function. Not only that but while I was completing this project, since it was a fairly new topic I had was confused while completing this assignment.
5) How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I can apply the skills that I have learn in this project in science class. This year we are learning about physical science. On of our units on speed and velocity. In science we need to find the rate of change of a moving object. Also, when I am an adult most of the jobs/ careers require a graph and statistics.
