pH Indicator Lab (Acids, Bases & Neutrals)
Standard: 5e. I know how to determine whether a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.
1. Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
This assignment relates to the standard 5e. because we were given 10 solutions and were told to determine weather the solution was acidic basic or neutral. We did this by smelling and touching to see if it fit the characteristic of acids, bases, or neutral. after hypothesizing what the solutions would be I was given litmus paper to determine if my hypothesizes were correct.
2. Elaborate on at least 1 Science & Engineering Practices you feel you met/gained from completing this project.
One SEP that I gained from this assignment is #3: planning and carrying out investigations. I planning/prepared my hypothesis of which solution was acidic or basic. I then carried out investigations, for this assignment it was putting the solution on litmus paper, to see if my hypothesizes were correct.
3. Upon reflecting on your work/score, what is ONE area of work you could have done better on? How will improving in this area benefit future work/projects?
One area that I could have improved on was my conclusion. In the conclusion I didn't explain in detail how knowing weather a solution would benefit a living organisms. I wasn't only that but I didn't get points because I didn't evaluate enough. Improving in this area will help me in other classes like math when I need to explain how I solved a problem or when I an doing ACE in my ELA class.
4. How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real world (outside of the classroom, particularly connections between the content and your life.
It is important to know if a solution is basic or acidic when I am cleaning. I would not want to clean metal with a solution is an acid because it would rust. Also, I would use a solution that is basic to clean rust.
