Life of African Americans
8.7 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people in the South from
1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced.
1. Describe the development of the agrarian economy in the South, identify the locations of the cotton-producing states, and discuss the significance of cotton and the cotton gin.
2. Trace the origins and development of slavery; its effects on black Americans and on the region’s political, social, religious, economic, and cultural development; and identify the strategies that were tried to both overturn and preserve it (e.g., through the writings and historical documents on Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey).
3. Examine the characteristics of white Southern society and how the physical environment influenced events and conditions prior to the Civil War.
4. Compare the lives of and opportunities for free blacks in the North with those of free blacks in the South.
1. Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
This assignment relates to the standard because for this project we needed to create either a comic, book, or brochure that explained the lifestyle of the South and North and explains the lives of the African American slaves. I chose to do the brochure. For the brochure I need a section for Life in the South. In this section I needed to explains the economy of the south and how it was heavily based on cotton. I also explained the geography of the South. For the North section I wrote about the industrial revolution. For the rest of the three sections I wrote about the origins and development of slavery. In one section I wrote about the African American leisure time. The second section was about the African American Church.
2. Elaborate on at least 1 skill and/or strength you feel you gained from completing this project. (coloring and or drawing are not skills to write about - elaborate on life skills you can take out of this project)
One skill or strength I gained from this project is to transform the information into something creative. I used the notes and other information I had on African Americans and South/ North to create a comic book with pictures.
3. Upon reflecting on your work/score, what is ONE area of work you could have done better on? How will improving in this area benefit future work/projects? (coloring and or drawing are not skills to write about - research skills, time management, etc…)
An area of work I could have done better is summarizing information. When creating the brochure I needed to condense all the information into one section. For the comic book project I could have done better time management. My picture and explanations were not as good as I could have do it.
4. How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real world (outside of the classroom, particularly in today’s society). Make connections between the content and your life.
I can use the skills that I learned was how to create the information I learned into a interesting way. When I teach children or when I want to make something more interesting and easier to understand.
