Pythagorean Theorem Murder Mystery
8.G.6 Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.
8.G.7 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.
1) Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
This assignment relates to the standard because for this assignment I needed to apply that Pythagorean Theorem to solve which person out of the three killed the victim. The project explained that the body of the victim was found in the middle of three buildings. Each building had a different height and each building had someone on top of it when the shooting occurred. Our job was to find which suspect would could have killed the victim. To do this we needed to find which building the suspect would be in. If the suspect wanted to kill the victim while he was on top of the building, there would have been a diagonal line which the bullet traveled. Since I know the height of the buildings and the distance from each building from where the victim was found I know that I can create triangle. So, I used Pythagorean Theorem to get the unknown length of the triangle.
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
The first step that I took to finish this assignment was step that I took to complete this project was to solve the problems with the answers given. With the answers I drew 3 of the scenarios and then wrote a paragraph on how and why that person was the criminal.
3) This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment demonstrates that I am able to use the Pythagorean Theorem in real life problems. This assignment also demonstrates that I completely understand how it works, since I needed to write a paragraph to explain how I solved for my answer.
4) I could have improved my work on this assignment by...
I could have improved my work on this assignment by writing the three paragraphs better. I felt like I could have used better vocabulary, and explained to the point. I also could have shown my work completely and used it as an example in my paragraph.
5) How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I can use the skills that I learned from this project in many ways. Architecture and engineering both use the Pythagorean theorem. An architect would use Pythagorean, theorem when designating a house. for example when drawing the layout for stairs.
