Planetary Debate
Science & Engineering Practice 7: Engaging in argument from evidence
Science & Engineering Practice 8: Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
1. Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
This assignment relates to two Science and Engineering Practices. The first one is obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information.. My team and I gathered evidence by obtaining, evaluating, and communicating in formation. We did this by using our notes, textbooks, and other research on the internet. The planet that our group was assigned to was Saturn. The next Science and Engineering Practice is engaging in argument from evidence. Using the evidence that we had gathered we needed to prove/ argue that our planet can sustain life. Not only that, but we also needed to invent a gadget to help us sustain life.
2. Elaborate on at least 1 Science & Engineering Practices you feel you met/gained from completing this project.
One SEP that I gained from this assignment is #7:engaging in argument from evidence. I have gained this SEP because we needed to debate with another group to prove that our planet can sustain life. We did this by stating evidence about our planet and how the gadget that we made helps our planet sustain life.
3. Upon reflecting on your work/score, what is ONE area of work you could have done better on? How will improving in this area benefit future work/projects?
One area that I can have done better is team work and planning ahead. In our team only 3 people out of 5 got the full points for the debate. Whenever someone says a fact that person gets one point. Each person needs to state five facts to get full points. Before we started the debate my team and I organized what each of us will say however, we didn't completely organize it. We didn't figure out who will do the counter arguments or explain the parts of the gadget. Due to this some people in our group didn't know what to say. Not only that but we also needed to use team work to help our teammates.
4. How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real world (outside of the classroom, particularly connections between the content and your life.
In the real world there will be times when I have to argue and prove that my opinions or something that I believe in is true. I can use the SEP: engaging in argument from evidence to use information to prove my idea. Not only that But I will now how to use better team work on the future and know that I must plan effectively when presenting with a group.
