Cheerios and Matter Demonstration
Standard: 3e. I know that in solids the atoms are closely locked in position and can only vibrate; in liquids the atoms and molecules are more loosely connected & can collide with and move past one another; and in gases the atoms and molecules are free to move independently, colliding frequently
1. Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
This assignment shows that I understand the standard 3e because while completing the project I needed to arrange the Cheerio like the atom structure of a solid, liquid, and gas. For the atom structure of solid I arranged the Cheerios so that they are tightly packed together I know that in solids the atoms are closely locked in position and can only vibrate; in liquids the atoms or molecules are more loosely connected & can collide with and move past one another. So, I placed the Cheerios slightly separated from each other in a random order. Lastly, the arrangement of the molecules for gases are that they move independently on their own.
2. Elaborate on at least 1 Science & Engineering Practices you feel you met/gained from completing this project.
One Science and Engineering Practices I feel I have met/gained from this assignment is number 4: analyzing and interpreting data, because we need to analyze the characteristics of the three different states of matter and explain them in our own words. I also needed to interpret the characteristics od the three states of matter and make a 2-dimentional model out of Cheerios.
3. Upon reflecting on your work/score, what is ONE area of work you could have done better on? How will improving in this area benefit future work/projects?
Reflecting on my work and score I think that I could have done a better is my use of vocabulary words and explaining the different characteristics of the different states of matter. By improving in this area it would help me in other classes because there is a constructive response for almost every class. Using my vocabulary more efficiently and being able to explain better would also help me on my writing exams.
4. How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real world (outside of the classroom, particularly connections between the content and your life.
I can apply the content and skills I learned from this assignment is in art class. When creating art in art class we need to use different types of media/ materials. All of these medias have different types of matter and knowing the different states of matter will help me make a more sturdier artwork. I also would need to know how the states of matter change over time and how it changes in different types of environment.
